Why are sensors necessary for the parking lot?
Whether residents, visitors, commuters or tourists - anyone traveling by car needs a parking space at their destination. But in the rarest of cases, you'll find one right away. Then the search begins, which becomes increasingly frustrating the longer it takes. This reduces attention and increases the risk of accidents.
The additional distances covered in the search for a parking space also cause higher fuel consumption. Thus, the process also puts a strain on drivers' finances. And last but not least, the vehicle emits more exhaust gases, which worsen the quality of the air in the city. So the search for parking spaces is not insignificant in terms of environmental pollution.
For these reasons, a smart guidance system is highly advisable. Sensors in the parking space detect whether it is occupied or free. In the latter case, the system guides drivers to the parking space.
How do the sensors for the LTS AG parking lot work?
The technology of intelligent parking space planning by our sensors is based on three components. These are first the Sensors for the parking lot themselves. They are embedded in the ground and use electromagnetics to detect vehicles above them. The advanced technology ensures a detection rate of at least 99 percent.
The signal as to whether a parking space is free or occupied is transmitted via a proprietary radio protocol to the TAPS Gateway is sent. This forwards the information to the infrastructure that the customer uses. This can be a cloud service or a local server. Communication with the TAPS gateway is possible via the following interfaces:
In addition, the TAPS gateway has various analog and digital inputs and outputs that enable customer-specific connectivity.
The third component belonging to the TAPS technology is the TAPS Software Suite. It is web-based and thus platform-independent. The software maps the data determined by the sensors in real time. This is done in a very descriptive and visual manner. Thus, operators can analyze the information and, if necessary, make corrections to the parking lot monitoring.
What are the distinguishing features of the sensors for the LTS AG parking lot?
The TAPS sensors offer a whole range of advantages. One of them is the uncomplicated installation. The sensors have a diameter of 155 millimeters and a height of 46 millimeters. Therefore, only a relatively small hole is required to embed them in the asphalt. In contrast to the installation of induction loops, the entire width of the parking lot does not have to be torn up.
The intended location of the sensor only needs to be closed off briefly for the drilling work. In total, it only takes around 30 minutes for a TAPS sensor to be ready for use. No cabling is required. The sensor is energy-autonomous, and both data transmission and the uploading of updates are wireless.
What's more, the sensors are low-maintenance. The costs over the entire life cycle are therefore significantly lower than for comparable products. In addition to the efficient use of parking spaces and customer satisfaction, the sensors also offer the operator financial benefits.
Where can the sensors for the parking lot from LTS AG be used?
The TAPS sensors from LTS AG can be used both indoors and outdoors. This is ensured because the sensors withstand both water and extreme temperatures. They belong to the IP67 protection class, which makes them resistant to 100 percent humidity. Even if it is temporarily under water, the sensor is still functional.
A temperature of minus 25 degrees Celsius makes just as little difference to the sensors as plus 65 degrees. So nothing stands in the way of use on the street. These are the places and situations for which the parking sensors make sense:
Public parking
Parking garages including parking deck
Parking spaces in residential areas used only by residents
Time limited parking
Control of prohibited parking
In parking garages, the sensors ensure that cars are guided directly to free parking spaces. Thanks to the sensors, it is also very easy to indicate by means of a light signal whether a parking space is free or occupied. On the top floor, the parking deck, the sensors also make it possible to control the parking spaces.
In most major cities, parking is subject to a fee and is limited in time. Parking sensors detect whether the maximum parking time has been exceeded. If this is the case, parking managers are informed. This ensures an increase in turnover and the provision of parking spaces to customers willing to pay.
The TAPS sensors can also monitor parking spaces where only authorized groups of people are allowed to park. These include parking spaces reserved for the fire department, police or ambulances. The fact that these parking spaces are free in an emergency is often a matter of life and death. If the sensors detect that a car is parked there without permission, a towing service can be notified quickly.
Even in residential areas, there are often parking spaces that are only intended for certain people: the residents. It must therefore be ensured that these parking spaces are only available to them. Parking sensors monitor that this is the case without restriction. In the event of violations, parking management or a towing company is called.
The TAPS sensors for Smart Parking and Smart Traffic
The TAPS technology is optimally suited for parking service providers, parking space managers and property managers. The parking sensors are also a helpful solution for operators of charging stations, airports, hotels and service areas.
However, the sensors are also aimed at cities and municipalities that want to make the search for parking spaces intelligent. Only recently, for a test run, we have 13 Sensors at the main station of St. Gallen into the ground.
However, the TAPS sensors are not only the ideal solution for Smart Parking. They can also be used to monitor the dynamically control traffic. For example, they can be used to adapt traffic light control to the volume of vehicles. At an intersection, for example, the flowing traffic does not have to be held up if no car is approaching on the other road.
Thanks to the uncomplicated installation, our sensors are also suitable for carrying out traffic counts. In this way, too, they help to plan traffic more intelligently. After all, the more accurate the traffic volume records are, the more effective smart regulation measures are.
