Modernization of city centers and high-traffic street areas
In today's world, where technology and innovation play an increasingly important role in the sustainable development of a city, it is essential to keep pace in the area of traffic management as well. The city of Winterthur has recognized this and decided to modernize its existing parking guidance system. The TAPS PLS was installed and went live in 13 parking facilities and at 23 sign locations.
What are parking guidance systems
Parking guidance systems with display panels are a good way to guide and manage parking in the city. They show how many parking spaces are still available in a given area and can be used in parking garages as well as on streets. The display panels work by using data from parking facilities. This information is then relayed to the display board using interfaces. In this way, vehicle owners can get an overview of the parking situation and find a free parking space more quickly.
TAPS PLS Integration in Winterthur
Many parking garages had different suppliers of parking guidance systems. Therefore it made sense to clarify the situation for each parking garage by our parking system experts and to prepare an implementation strategy. For this purpose, an inspection of all parking garages or determination of the parking garage systems was carried out in order to record the current infrastructure and to be able to guarantee the optimal implementation. In a further step, the protocols and standards for a flawless communication transmission were defined. The goal of this measure was that the parking data could be transmitted, displayed and processed on the TAPS platform. From the TAPS platform, this data is then transmitted to the predefined display locations and displayed.
Advantages of TAPS PLS
The system structure of TAPS PLS enables integration of already existing PLS systems or a new acquisition of a PLS. In the case of modernization or new acquisition of parking guidance systems, thanks to wireless communication, the cabling from the computer room to the displays is completely unnecessary. With this concept, practically no structural intervention is required, either on the computer room side or on the signs themselves. Since the old computers are superfluous and no new physical server or cables are required, a conversion is cost-efficient and can be implemented quickly. This makes the TAPS PLS many times less expensive than its competitors.
Communication between the parking garages and the new TAPS DCS center is handled by the modular and adaptive TAPS Gateway. For this purpose, a TAPS Gateway is installed in each parking garage, which then communicates from the respective parking garage systems and receives the data for processing. The gateway also handles the wireless data transmission (LTE) of the parking garage data to the TAPS PLS platform on the parking garage side. With the TAPS PLS platform, the data of the individual parking garages can be retrieved and evaluations / statistics can be easily viewed. The system is designed in such a way that additional locations and functions can be added at a later date. Communication between the new "DCS center" and the sign locations also takes place via the TAPS gateways. One gateway is required for each sign location.
Implementation and conclusion of the parking guidance system
The project was successfully implemented and the modernized parking guidance system has already gone live. Since then, Winterthur residents and visitors have benefited from the advantages of the new digital displays. The information is reliable, accurate, and available in real time, resulting in an improved parking search and more efficient use of parking facilities.
Conclusion: The modernization of the parking guidance system in Winterthur from analog to digital displays was an important step towards innovative city management. The use of parking guidance displays and gateways made it possible to provide information on parking spaces in real time, resulting in an optimized search for parking spaces and an improved traffic situation. Winterthur is thus a pioneer city in the field of smart traffic solutions and shows how technology can help make urban life more pleasant and efficient.
