How does LTS make it easier to find parking?

Viele Autofahrer sind regelmässig auf der Suche nach einem Stellplatz für ihr Fahrzeug. Meist geschieht dies in der Nähe des Arbeitsplatzes oder vor dem eigenen Zuhause. Auch Touristen, die einen Stadtspaziergang vorhaben oder eine Sehenswürdigkeit besuchen wollen, müssen sich vorher grösstenteils auf Parkplatzsuche begeben. Diese verursacht allerdings Probleme auf mehreren Ebenen.
What problems does the search for a parking space cause?
The negative impact of parking affects countless people, not to mention the environment:
According to a study, the search for a parking space costs every German the equivalent of around 900 francs a year. This includes the cost of gasoline and the time wasted searching. For Switzerland, the sum will look similar.
Germans spend an average of around 41 hours a year looking for a parking space. This figure will also be transferable to Switzerland.
More than one third of the cars on the road in Swiss cities are looking for a parking space. This is due, among other things, to the fairly small number of public parking spaces available in this country. The considerable noise and exhaust pollution that this creates can be drastically reduced by intelligent solutions.
According to a German study, smart parking could save up to 0.9 million tons of CO₂ per year.
Not to be forgotten is also the nervous strain caused by parking lot traffic. People who spend a long time looking for a parking space for their vehicle become increasingly aggressive. This increases the risk of accidents.
How does TAPS help with finding a parking space?
TAPS consists of three components: sensors, gateways and a software. TAPS ground sensors are embedded in the ground under parking spaces. Based on advanced algorithms and magnetic detection, they then register whether or not there is a car above them. They do this with an impressive accuracy of more than 99 percent thanks to state-of-the-art technology.
In addition, the sensors have a very low mass. One sensor has a diameter of 146 millimeters and is 42 millimeters high. This means that it is sufficient to drill a hole in order to sink a sensor into the ground. The fact that it is energy-autonomous also makes it unnecessary to lay cables.
From many points of view, the sensors thus represent a more practical alternative to the induction loops that are still widely used in many places today. The installation of a sensor takes a maximum of 30 minutes, which greatly reduces the duration of the shut-off. In addition, the quite small borehole is gentle on the floor covering.
Of course, the TAPS sensors are very robust thanks to safety glass. So they don't mind if cars constantly roll over them. Extreme heat, cold and humidity do not damage them either.
As an alternative to the ground sensors we also offer ceilling sensors. They can be mounted on the ceiling and detect from there whether there is a vehicle underneath them. This makes them particularly useful in parking garages.
Gateway and Software
The information that the TAPS sensors collect is passed on to the TAPS Gateway It also has compact dimensions and is resistant to extreme temperatures. It also has the IK10 protection class, which makes it resistant to vandalism.
The gateway can be located at a distance of up to 150 meters from the sensor. In addition, up to 64 sensors can be connected to a single gateway. Furthermore, this number can be expanded upon customer request.
From the gateway, the data from all sensors is sent in real time to the TAPS Software.There, they are displayed visually and can thus be analyzed in a convenient way. At least as important, however, is that they can be used to control parking search traffic.
Common examples include digital street signs that dynamically display how many free parking spaces there are in a particular area of the city. This allows motorists to assess at a glance whether it is worth driving in that direction.
It is also possible to provide individual parking spaces with a display that can be seen from afar, indicating whether it is free. This lets drivers know from a distance whether there is a usable parking space on the street.
All these measures make the search for a parking space much easier and more relaxed. They can thus help to mitigate or completely eliminate the above-mentioned disadvantages.

Ground sensors for traffic counting of the parking facility at Lidl in Aegerten (BE)
In Aegerten (BE) we were allowed to install ground sensors for Lidl Switzerland for traffic counting of the parking area. The data is sent to the municipality of Aegerten and is used for traffic monitoring.
